Hear Camila Cabello's Demo Of 'The Middle' By Maren Morris, Zedd & Grey

Camila Cabello’s demo version of “The Middle” has hit the web.

The full audio of the “Easy” singer’s never-before-heard rendition of the smash 2018 record made its way on YouTube earlier this week, and it sounds as good as you’d expect.

Originally performed as a collaboration with country darling Maren Morris leading vocals alongside EDM hitmakers Zedd and Grey, Cabello’s interpretation hits a little different with a touch of somber and longing, a feeling that tugs at the heartstrings a bit harder than Morris’ powerhouse approach.

“The Middle” was a huge success when it released and became an instant summer fave amongst partygoers everywhere, ascending to the No. 5 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and was also in the running at the 2019 Grammy Awards for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.

Surprisingly, Cabello was one of many singers pitched to demo the track. As Variety revealed in 2018, Demi Lovato passed up the record because it was “too pop,” but the former Fifth Harmony songbird also dropped the bop last-minute because she didn’t want to overshadow the success of her song “Havana,” which was gaining traction on the Billboard Hot 100 at the time.

This isn’t the first time a mega collaboration has gotten away from Cabello. As fans know, The Chainsmokers originally considered her for their chart-topping 2016 hit “Closer,” but ultimately selected Halsey to feature on the record. (You can hear Cabello’s demo here.)

“I loved the song but I had to turn it down because I was with the group at the time, and we were about to put an album out,” Cabello explained to our very own Elvis Duran. "I always tried to do my solo stuff off cycle, so that was super on, and so I had to say no, and then that was the number one song in the world.”
